Make Room For Winstead

10 cloverfield lane

I’ve always looked at Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Brie Larson as hip modern hottie awesome acting equals.  They’ve shared credits in two movies – the too cool for its own good Scott Pilgrim vs. the World + the not another teeny movie The Spectacular Now, and they share my love and attention

Brie hit the jackpot with Room, but methinks Mary Elizabeth Winstead could have pulled off the role too.  And how do I know this?  Winstead got a Room of her own – in 10 Clovefield Lane – a not so-sequel sequel to the kinda meh 2008 movie without a # or street type.  But in Cloverfield Lane, ME Winstead isn’t stuck in a room with her kid (so there’s not much to sniffle about here) – she’s a girl stuck in a bunker with a crackpot John Goodman and a bearded John Gallagher Jr (who played Brie’s boyfriend in the great Short Term 12), and it’s weird and strange and mysterious and it keeps you guessing and stuff, all in a good AND uneasy way

Cloverfield Lane aint no Room, cause it’s Room meets The Martian meets 28 Days Later.  Explaining why it’s all those meetings would give things away, and I don’t want to give away any of the fun of this fun movie, that’s not really fun, but it is, but it isn’t

Sure, Winstead won’t be getting any Oscar noms for her peformance in Cloverfield, but she’s juss as good as Larson is in her Room.  Life isn’t fair, Oscars are certainly not fair, but if there were an awards for bestest eyes, Winstead would beat out Larson easily and breezily.  The eyes have it, and Winstead’s have me, for always and 5ever

Get On Up
Soul Brother # Won

get on up

I know who James Brown is. Lucky to have seen him in concert, TWICE! Perhaps today’s kids aren’t all up on their Godfather of Soul knowledge – and hence the need for dem to GET ON UP on it, as suggested by the talking head testimonial trailer singing his singing praises, that’s been used more as this biopic’s trailer than its own actual trailer. Well, regardless if you know JB or don’t, your probably won’t learn much about him in Tate Taylor‘s (The Help) lively, but information-free Get On Up

Sure, the film starts off with a bang – focusing on his infamous run-in/away from the law, and sizzles the ears til its finish – with the actual recorded versions of Brown’s vocals and music pumpin loud, but by the end, the picture isn’t really complete. I was saying to myself, I know James Brown, but I don’t know anymore than I knew before I saw this here film. And tsk tsk for no nods to his time with The Blue Brothers (even if Dan Aykroyd is in the movie), or ‘Living In America’ for Rocky IV or being wasted on TV!!!

But but but but but, you wanna know what? Sure, the story is thin, but his music is THICK, and JB’s shtick shines on, in the soulful shoes of Chadwick Boseman. Boseman displayed quiet brilliance as Jackie Robinson in last year’s 42, and exudes beyond exudtion exuding in Get On Up (even if his JB accent sorta sounds like Casey Affleck and his annoying voice). The movie IS his performance (+ some excellent make-up work), and Boseman not only plays the man, he IS the MAN. He should play every prominent African-American figure of all thymes. They should remake Ray and see what he can do with it. Or they should make a movie where Jamie Foxxxx’s Ray Charles teams up with Boseman’s Brown to fight all the Marvel characters!!!

The supporting players are gifted actors – Nelsan Ellis, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer – but they aint the MAN like Boseman is, like James Brown is, like Boseman as Brown is is

Jersey Boys

jersey boys

There’s nothing more cheesy than the Jersey Boys musical. That is until I encountered the movie version of the musical, directed by the ‘musical’ Clint Eastwood, which reveals JUSS how cheesy the musical is, when you add in close-ups and sets and things and stuff

You either know who Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons are or you don’t. If you don’t, you probably won’t care to see how they came together and overcame ‘adversity’ to make such sweet sweet music. You actually don’t need to know their story, since there isn’t much of one (unlike the life of James Brown), but the music is juss so darn good. I mean, my wife and I saw Frankie months back (HE’S STILL GOT IT!!!!), and the first dance at our wedding was to ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’

When I first saw this movie, I was repelled and repulsed at juss how cheesy it was. Then weeks passed and I couldn’t stop thinking how great the movie was because it WAS ultra-cheesy. I was like, you juss to good to be true, can’t take my MIND OFF OF YOU AND YOUR OOOOOZY CHEESE!!!

Oh Gyp DeCarlo. Oh Gyp. Oh Gyp. OH GYP!!!! Who Gyp? He’s some gangster guy played by Christopher Walken, who solves everyone’s problems, like the ‘problems’ the Four Seasons encounter. These problems? That the band’s founder Tommy DeVito is bad with money, and that the guy who plays him – Vincent Piazza – may be bad at acting. Or maybe Tommy DeVito IS an actual walking Italian-Jersey stereotype and Vincent Piazza is playing him perfectly. But who cares, cause the whole thing’s cheesy, so Jimmy, give me a pizza wit NUTTIN

Rush
Winning Formula One
Official Website | Trailers & Mo
R | 123 min

I have negative one interest in Formula One racing, and after seeing the  directed/ written Rush, I still have negative 1 interest in the ‘sport’, but I have 1293891991321293 positive things to say about their beyond interesting/captivating/thrilling/fun film (same thing happened after I saw the INCREDIBLE doc Senna).  Ya see, skinny car racing is what the film’s rival characters do.  Sure, we root for them to win, but we care more about them as people then we do about thems taking the checkered flagz.  This is what the great sports movies do.  Actual winning is secondary to winning personalities

The winning dudes are real life F1 racers – icy technical Niki Lauda and playboy pretty boy James Hunt, and they pushed each other to the limit in the mid-seventies, by putting the pedal to the metal, and trash-talking to the mental.  Lauda is embodied by the GREAT GREAT GREAT and vastly underatted and unknown (to Americans) , and Hunt by the greatly beautiful , probably handing in his best work to date

Rush is a terrible name for a movie, but that’s eggzactly what the movie felt like and how it was paced – quickly zooming and vrrrrrrrrroooommmmmming us thru the two’s racing origin stories (they started in Formula Three.  hmmm, didn’t even know there were other types of Formula # racingsz), to their extracurricular activities (Hunt’s many c#nts, and Lauda’s main lady – played by the gorgeous ), to duking it out on the Formula One circuit (focusing mainly on the 1976 season), where it all basically culminates on that one fateful day that would intertwine the two’s lives together forever

It’s all a GAS GAS GAS, that’s both FAST and FURIOUS, and has more brains AND brawn (and beauty – much WOWsers in the cinematography AND colorist departments!) in one movie than the Fast & Furious series’ has haves over six movies!!!!!!  AND WE LOVE THOSE MOVIES, BUT THEY HAVE MEATHEADS, AND RUSH AS AWESOMEHEADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!  AND THE FORMULA IS SIMPLE… AWESOMEHEADS will ALWAYS be > MEATHEADS!!!
